Understanding prosthetic reconstruction

Guy's Hospital Maxillofacial Prosthetics Unit, Academic centre for reconstructive science

These three booklets provide patients with detailed medical information about facial prosthetics. By presenting every step of the creation of each prosthesis (auricular, orbital and nasal), they serve as a simple and comprehensive guide throughout the reconstruction. Each booklet follows a patient though the course of their reconstruction, which creates a more personal tone for the reader as they learn about what the treatment entails.
The illustrations were created with a fine brush and ink to create a calm and clear visual language for patients. The contrasting colour palette keeps the pages easy to read, while also creating an aesthetic distance from a sometimes intimidating medical context.
This project was created with Dr Trevor Coward, Reader / Consultant in Maxillofacial & Craniofacial Rehabilitation for King’s College London Dental Institute.
